Three
Steps Forward, One Step Back - An Update on TSAS
In the last newsletter I explained the origins of TSAS and
mentioned our growing list of activities. The last few months have been
extremely busy and this newsletter will include brief reports on what we have
been doing. In these opening remarks I will just highlight four things, three of
which represent major steps forward, and the fourth something of a
setback.

Summer
Academy Lets Students See Terrorism from the Inside Out
Held July 21-26 at the Liu
Institute for Global Issues, the TSAS Summer Academy brought together a unique
collection of speakers and students for an immersive training session on
terrorism. The Summer Academy kicked off with a solemn visit to the Air India
Memorial in Stanley Park, and it ended with a heartfelt discussion with family
members of terrorism victims from both Air India and 9/11.

Applied
Knowledge Opportunities, A Student Perspective
This past July, I was fortunate enough to attend the 2013
TSAS summer academy, held at the beautiful University of British Columbia
campus. A large part of my decision to become a junior research affiliate with
TSAS stemmed from the fact that I wanted to connect with other academics and
government officials working and researching the same area as myself, and I saw
the opportunity to do so in the five-day long academy offered by TSAS.

Dr.
Tasleem Bhudwani, RCMP: Developing Fact-Based Policy and Safe Communities
Unlike the other strictly academic TSAS affiliates presented
among our highlights, Dr. Tasleem Budhwani demonstrates another important aspect
of the network, as she directs her main focus within the world of policy.
Working as a research analyst with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) as
their 'Acting in Charge' in the Intelligence Research and Development unit, she
puts her Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa to good use.
Her role as a civilian member of the RCMP currently revolves around the topics
of community policing and outreach.

Important
Take-Aways from the Second TSAS Workshop
The second TSAS workshop
was held on May 1-2, 2013, at the Minto Suite Hotel in Ottawa. The title of the
workshop, Turning a New Leaf: Developments in Research and Policy on
Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, captures the breadth of the
themes covered by speakers well. The event was designed so that each
presentation could be discussed at length with the audience. A TED talk format
was (loosely) followed in order for one or two powerful ideas per presentation
to take centre stage. The audience, composed of senior scholars (35%), graduate
students (15%), and government representatives (50%) was clear: the workshop was
a resounding success!

Calling
All Thought Leaders and Writers to the TSAS Blog
TSAS invites all researchers and policy analysts to
contribute to the new TSAS Blog. We have
established the blog as a response to the many requests at the May TSAS workshop
in Ottawa to set a virtual forum for ideas and discussion. Our blog master,
Megan Melanson, is actively seeking volunteers to establish themes and encourage
discussion in each of the 3 TSAS pillars of terrorism, security, and society. If
you specialize in one of these areas and are interested in contributing to the
advancement of the TSAS network in this manner, please contact Megan directly by
clicking here.
