Canada Concerned by Ongoing Violence in Iraq

January 19, 2014 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today released the following statement:
"Canada is concerned by the growing insecurity and worsening humanitarian situation in Iraq, particularly in Anbar Province. Iraqi Security Forces, together with the people of Anbar, are intensifying their efforts to rid the area of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an extremist terrorist organization.
"As I told the Prime Minister of Iraq during my visit last April, Canada firmly supports Iraq in its determination to counter the rising threat of terrorism in the region. We are committed to expanding our collaboration with the Iraqi people at this critical time in its transition.
"Canada also calls upon the Iraqi government to work across religious and ethnic lines during the current crisis. A unified and inclusive Iraq stands the best chance of strengthening its nascent democracy and rooting out extremist and terrorist elements."
