International Women's Day Documentary & Discussion

In honour of International Women's Day (March 8), Noor presents a screening of the documentary Rafea: Solar Mama, followed by a discussion with Professor Ananya Mukherjee-Reed.


Rafea: Solar Mama documents the journey of Rafea: a Bedouin woman from one of the poorest desert villages in Jordan, who travels to India to attend a six-month program training illiterate women from around the world to become solar engineers. Directed by Mona Eldaief and Jehane Noujaim.


Ananya Mukherjee-Reed (PhD) is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at York University.  She is the author of numerous works, including the book Human Development and Social Power: Perspectives from South Asia (Taylor & Francis, 2008)

Nayereh Tohidi (PhD) is a Professor and former Chair at the Department for Gender and Women's Studies at California State University Northridge (CSUN).  She is the author of numerous articles, and co-edited the books Globalization, Gender and Religion: The Politics of Women's Rights in Catholic and Muslim Contexts (Palgrave MacMillan, 2001), and Women in Muslim Societies: Diversity within Unity (Lynne Rienner Pub, 1998).

Our Jewish-Muslim film festival continues with the third in the series. Everyone is welcome.

A band comprised of members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts centre, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town. Directed by Elan Kolirin.
