Lecture | The Extraterrestrial Life Debate from Religious Perspectives
|
By Dr Parandis Tajbakhsh
Modern science provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to examine the prospects of life beyond Earth. One aspect of the "extraterrestrial life debate" is on the possibility of God having created other inhabited worlds, and our position with respect to such beings.
This talk will give a brief historical overview of the debate - including the beliefs of some of the founders of modern physics and astronomy, such as Galileo, Kepler, Newton, and Herschel and their efforts to find life beyond Earth - and will discuss some of the potential religious implications of any extraterrestrial life discovery from an Islamic perspective.
Parandis Tajbakhsh has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from York University, and a PhD in Astrophysics from University of Toronto. Her research interests are: Mathematical Aspects of General Relativity; Extrasolar Planets; Astrobiology; Interaction between Science and Religion; History and Philosophy of Science.

Prom Wear Clothing Drive
|
Noor Cultural Centre is collecting gently-used clothing for community agency New Circles.
New Circles serves residents in Toronto's Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, and Victoria Village neighbourhoods. Their call:
We are now seeking donations for our Annual Prom Boutique. The program ensures that the financial costs of prom do not inhibit students from attending a milestone event. In 2013, we were able to help nearly 500 youth.
Specifically requested are the following items:
· Gently-used formal wear for young women and men (a tailor is available to customize the clothing)
· Gently-used accessories such as: purses, shoes (flats, heels and dress shoes for men), ties, dress shirts, belts, jewelry, shawls, scarves, shrugs, formal jacket/blazers, tights, leggings
· New toiletries for boys
· New makeup for girls
Please note that given the cultural and religious diversity in the clientele, there is also a need for more modest clothing items.
Donations may be dropped off at Noor Cultural Centre
March 28 - April 11.
Please contact: admin@noorculturalcentre.ca or (416) 444-7148 ext. 222 to inquire about access times. |
