CSIS Canada: Deborah Gunton

(1/5) On , we pay tribute to our departed former colleague, Deborah Gunton – a trailblazer, mentor and much admired woman at CSIS who passed away in 2017.

(2/5) Deborah started her career with the working in counter terrorism, moving to CSIS when it was formed in 1984. She was one of our organisation’s first investigators.

(3/5) Deborah was the first woman at CSIS to be posted overseas, overseeing numerous important and complicated files and operations. She represented CSIS at the highest levels of government and in far corners across the world.

(4/5) Most importantly, Deborah was an advocate and mentor for countless women in the intelligence field. She left an indelible mark on generations of women intelligence officers.

(5/5) Deborah Gunton’s legacy at CSIS is that of a trailblazing woman, rising through the ranks in a field then dominated by men, championing countless women to reach further and higher in their careers. Today, we honour that legacy.

FT Women at the Top-London | 20 September 2018

Source:  https://live.ft.com/Events/2018/FT-Women-at-the-Top

OVERVIEW

The FT Women at the Top summit returns to lead the debate on how to achieve gender equality at the top level of business in the UK and beyond.
We will look at the biggest issues shaping the gender diversity agenda today: the impact of recent societal pressure – highlighted by Times Up and high-profile sexual harassment scandals – and how it can be catalysed into progress, the latest on the gender pay gap, and looking ahead, the challenge of ensuring that efforts to get more women at the top are inclusive, opening doors for broader workplace diversity. As always, there will also be practical tips and action-focused discussion to help you manage your own career and to drive change at your organisation.
Join us in September to push for urgent action on gender diversity in business: hear from the men and women who are driving change from the top, learn from examples of policies that really work, and help us to make gender imbalances in the workplace a thing of the past.
We will discuss:
The latest on the gender pay gap: what's next?
Me Too, Times Up and the backlash
Inclusion beyond women at the top
Living longer: how to plan for a multi-stage career
How to manage money: why aren't women investing?
Using AI to make workplaces more inclusive
How to fix bias - whether unconscious or not

From us to Rashed,
We, a group of feminists from different Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa, and from all across the World including London and Stockholm, have gathered to -achieve a small yet important goal- financially and morally support Rashed, a 23 year old transman from Irbid, Jordan. Rashed went through many challenges and undefeated he went on to live despite all difficulties embracing his identity and fulfilling his aspirations. Rashed went through social, familial and institutional oppression, yet he now promotes the rights of transgender people in Irbid.
We are currently raising funding for Rashed to support his operations. We were able to fund raise for his top surgery but Rashed due to health reasons is in need of a second surgery.

Discussing Kinneret Lahad and Daphna Hacker's books

Talking about Keneret Lahad and Dafna Haker's books at Haifa Feminist Institute!

Lahad's book "A Table for One – a Critical Reading of Singlehood, Gender and Time", is the first book to examine the deep relation between social perceptions to singlehood. Lahad develops a theory which analyses how perceptions of time plays a crucial role in representing female singlehood, alongside analyzing several social norms that are connected to age and time.

Dafna Haker' book "Legalized Families in the Era of Bordered Globalization" examines the reciprocal relations between globalization, borders, families and legislation. Hacker examines the roles of international, multinational and religious laws and their role in shaping the lives of millions of families who were affected by the challenges and opportunities that were created due to globalization and cultural and national borders.

We thank Yali Hashash, Sarai Aharoni, Maha Karkabi Sabbah And Arian Ronen Brazelai for reviewing and discussing the books.

CIJA
Dear Debra V.,
As a member of our community, your priorities are our priorities. Our advocacy work will simply not succeed without a passionate, engaged, and active community to guide our efforts.
That's why we recently hosted our annual grassroots consultation in twelve cities across the country. Our goal was to hear directly from our community about the issues that matter most.
I'd like to personally thank you for your interest in our Winnipeg consultation. Your input – and that of community members across the country – is crucial in determining what CIJA's priorities will be for the coming year. Our work would not be possible without your valuable contribution. So, again, thank you!
One of the biggest takeaways for me was a reminder of the energy, dedication, and thoughtfulness of our community. Despite a healthy diversity of opinion, a number of key themes emerged across the country. In no particular order, here are the top five:
Click here to view the local results and see how your city compares nationally.
It's clear we are united in our desire to ensure the next generation of Jewish Canadians has a secure future in this great country. In every city, we met passionate community members – like you – who shared opinions, offered observations, and provided us with insights that will guide our work in the coming year.
If you have any suggestions that might improve future consultations, I'd love to hear from you.
I hope to will join us again in 2019.
Warm regards,
Steve McDonald
