عربي | עברית 38TH ANNIVERSARY OF LAND DAY, 30 MARCH In 1976, Palestinian citizens of Israel staged mass protests against the state's expropriation of thousands of dunams of Palestinian-owned land in the Galilee.  38 years later, the struggle continues, as Israel daily expropriates Palestinian land for alleged security and settlement purposes on both sides of the Green Line.  NEW DATA ON LAND ALLOCATION AND THE SALE OF PALESTINIAN REFUGEE PROPERTIES Today, the state of Israel, through the Israel Land Authority (ILA) owns 93% of the land of Israel, and through the Civil Administration controls the majority of land in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).  The state's  unequal land distribution policy grants substantial privilege to Jewish citizens, daily undermining the rights of Palestinians to live with dignity on their land. Wanting to document how Israel continues to tighten its control over confiscated Palestinian-owned land and property in Israel and the OPT, Adalah researched and compared the numbers and locations of state-published bids for new housing units and industrial and commercial zones, and its sales of Palestinian refugee property.  Read and share the full data report!   The High Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel has declared a general strike in commemoration of Land Day on 30 March 2014.   ACCESS TO EDUCATION IN THE NAQAB (NEGEV) While home demolitions and land confiscations continue in the Naqab, the state also pursues discriminatory educational policies in the newly recognized Arab Bedouin villages. In the village of Al-Fura'a, 180 out of 400 high-school aged children have dropped out of school due to the lack of a local high school in their village of 5,000 people. Read about Adalah's demand to establish a high school in the village, which would substantially decrease the shocking 45% dropout rate, many of whom are girls. Further, numerous schools for Bedouin children are not connected to the national electricity grid. Following Adalah's petition last summer, the Education Ministry announced this month that it began work to link three of the seven schools to electricity in the coming months. PRESS RELEASE Welcoming vote at UNHRC, Minister Malki: Vote signals world will not stand for profiteering from occupation Ramallah - 28 March 2014 Minister Riad Malki welcomed the near unanimous adoption of resolutions on the situation of Human Rights in the Occupied State of Palestine by the Human Rights Council in the course of its 25th session this Friday. The Minister stated, "The resolutions reaffirm the primacy of human rights of the Palestinian people and the obligations of all States to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms, as stated in the Charter and elaborated in related international covenants and resolutions". Foreign Minister Malki particularly welcomed the solid support lent by member states to the resolution on illegal Israeli settlements, which included new action-oriented clauses regarding involvement in settlement-related activities. He declared, "Palestine will work closely with member states to ensure the scrupulous implementation of this resolution".  Among other things, the resolution called on states to "implement the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and to take appropriate measures to encourage businesses domiciled in their territory and/or under their jurisdiction, including those owned or controlled by them, to refrain from committing or contributing to gross human rights abuses of Palestinians, in accordance with the expected standard of conduct in the Guiding Principles and relevant international laws and standards". Minister Malki expressed Palestine's appreciation to all countries who voted in favor of the resolutions for their principled support. He underscored, "by adopting these resolutions, the international community has reaffirmed its commitment to international law and human rights". He added, "the vote also reflects a clear affirmation by the international community on the indisputable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, establishment of their independent state and return based on UN Resolution 194". Minister Malki concluded, "this vote confirms the world's clear condemnation of the systematic human rights violations committed by Israel, the occupying Power, against the Palestinian people and their fundamental rights. Most pertinently, it signals that the world is committed to ensuring that no profiteering is allowed from the occupation regime".
